The holiday shopping season kicks off Friday. Many people will pile into the big retailers on Thanksgiving day and then again on Black Friday. Retailers have been busy making last minute preparations so they'll be ready for the expected huge crowds. But small businesses are also hoping to see a boom in their bottom line as well.
"Retail needs that up-tick the day after Thanksgiving," said Susan Blevins. She's the owner of The Toy Place in downtown Huntsville. She says they depend on the people who come in on Black Friday.
"There are local businesses that depend on fourth quarter sales to keep them going throughout the year," she said.
According to the National Retail Federation, more than 140 million people are expected to shop over the Thanksgiving weekend. More than 23 percent of them plan to shop on Thanksgiving Day and more than 69 percent plan to shop on Black Friday. When the shoppers shop locally, Malinda Collum, owner of The Cotton Gin in Madison said, it helps everyone.
"As far as sales tax it goes back in to the city of Madison and as far as small businesses it helps us also," she said.
It's help they hope to see in the form of customers who will purchase their products and help their bottom line.
