HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A decades-old Hattiesburg home which had been converted into apartments was destroyed by fire Saturday morning.  The house, on North 26th Avenue across from the Trent Lott Center at Southern Miss, caught fire around 10 a.m. and was gutted by the flames.

Fire officials said the house was divided into seven apartments and at least some were occupied. But, no one was injured.

More than two dozen Hattiesburg firefighters worked the blaze for about two hours and prevented it from spreading to adjacent homes and businesses.

"I don't know who to give the credit to (for keeping the fire from spreading), because there are so many different people...God would be first, but the Hattiesburg Police Department and the Hattiesburg Fire Department and everybody did an awesome job and I'm so thankful and so grateful," said Mel Johnston, owner of Beautiful Day, which is located next door to the house.

"The whole house was pretty well gutted," said Lt. Don Massengale, of the Hattiesburg Fire Dept. "The ceiling is pretty well out of it, a lot of the roof is collapsed in there. We had a problem with the gas main in the back, there. It kept on re-starting the fire," he said.

A motor home parked in a driveway next to the house and two other cars were damaged by the fire.
