Investigators in Union County said jewelry was swiped from an Upstate woman who recently passed away, and it happened during her viewing.
Deputies said it was a distant relative named Tammy Lloyd, 46, who did it. Lloyd was charged with petit larceny after family said she stole from the deceased woman.
Union County deputies said Lloyd took an angel-shaped brooch from Dora Scroggins, which was only valued at $30. Scroggins' family, though, said it meant far more to them and they're just shocked that it was taken.
Trudie Rhinehart, Scroggins' daughter, said it was her daughter, Lori Harvey, who noticed the brooch was missing near the end of the viewing on Saturday.
"I still can't believe it happened," said Rhinehart. "I probably ain't never going to see the pin again. I just need it back to put it back on her. It wasn't for me to keep, it was going in the ground with her."
Harvey said she searched the casket but hadn't found the pin, and after Rhinehart asked other family members what happened, with no response, she called deputies.
"It's not just painful. It makes you angry … I'm mostly angry now because of what they have done and put my family through and my grandmother," said Harvey.
Rhinehart said her mother was the peacemaker for the family, so this is even more upsetting that there was a fight surrounding her death. Rhinehart said she's glad her mother is at least at peace.
