The following is an editorial from FOX6 WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Thursday, Dec. 12:
The last recession from which we're still recovering, had a major impact on most of us. Among those hardest hit by the economic downturn, were small businesses. Empty store fronts popped up all over Alabama.
It's been encouraging to see the lights turned back on in many of those locations, a sure sign of some optimism among entrepreneurs. Those new local small businesses offer so much to their communities…including jobs, an increased tax base, unique shopping, dining and service options and the attraction of additional business development.
We have many holiday shopping options…local businesses, big box stores, catalogs, on-line shopping, etc. I'm sure most of us use all of those sources to cover our Christmas lists each year. Well, for many local retailers, the holiday season is where the rubber meets the road. Their year will be profitable or not depending upon those last four to five weeks of holiday sales.
As you shop for gifts this year, please shop locally when you can. You are supporting local business development and the shopping options that come with that, local job creation and your community.
