(WMC - TV) - A Memphis doctor is in the hospital after being beaten and robbed at his own home in a gated community near White Station and Rich Roads.
The victim, a well known Memphis optometrist, is in critical condition at the MED. According to police Doctor Burton Bodan was followed into the gated community by two men. They attacked him inside his garage before robbing him of cash and credit cards.
Dr. Bodan made it inside and called police. The two men fled the scene.
"We've had no problems at all, real good security with it being gated. What happened the other night is the first time we've ever had anything happened, they followed him in and apparently mugged him," said Steve Fergus.
Neighbors were shocked to hear what happened to a man they say is very generous.
"They picked on somebody that would have never harmed anybody," said Faith Kaye. "He would have probably given them anything."
"We're keeping our doors locked, even through we're inside the community, being real careful if anybody is behind us when we're coming in," said Fergus.
And are also watching the gate closer than ever, mindful of who comes in and out.
"And who's behind you and we always let people come through the gates and it's making us think about stopping and looking before we get out of the car," said Faye.
Friends say Dr. Bodan served the Memphis community for 50 years and served people from all walks of life and all income levels. They also say he maintained a one-man, optometry practice for most of his career giving everyone who walked through the door his utmost attention, respect, and care.
He remains in critical condition at the MED. If have any information that could lead to an arrest you're asked to call Crimestoppers at 901-528-CASH.
