A Springfield man is facing numerous felony charges after stealing a car with his 20-month-old child, fleeing and then fighting with deputies.
At approximately 8 p.m. Monday, Effingham County Sheriff's deputies responded to Elbert Arnsdorff Road on a report of an auto theft. Officials say the suspect, Charles Lambert, 29, reportedly stole a vehicle from that location while he had his 20 month old son with him.
Shortly after, a deputy spotted the stolen vehicle traveling on Ga. 21 near Springfield Egypt Road. As the deputy approached the vehicle, Lambert took off at a high rate of speed. Due to the speed, reckless driving, and a small child in the car, deputies chose not to pursue him, according to ECSO.
"Deputies located Lambert at a residence a short time after on Turkey Branch Road where he refused to unlock the door," Sheriff's spokesman David Ehsanipoor said in a news release.
"Effingham deputies made entry into the residence and arrested Lambert. At one point during the incident, Lambert fled from deputies as his handcuffs were being adjusted. Deputies apprehended him again and used a Taser to subdue him. During the incident, Lambert kicked one deputy in the face resulting in minor injuries," Ehsanipoor explained.
Lambert was arrested and charged with theft by taking an automobile, cruelty to children on the first degree, child endangerment, possession of controlled substance, felony obstruction of a law enforcement officer, battery on a law enforcement officer, escape, DUI, and crossing guard lines with contraband.
Lambert has been denied bond.
