A National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) spokesperson confirms they will investigate the Gate City apartment explosion.
Terry Williams says the agency has an investigator in Birmingham Tuesday night and more should arrive Wednesday.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the explosion. Birmingham Fire Chief Ivor Brooks says that the ensuing fire was caused because the explosion blew apart the natural gas lines running into the apartment units.
"When the explosion [happened], it blew where the gas meters were connected to the building, it blew that loose. So we had a free flow of natural gas in that area, which was actually burning upon our arrival," Chief Brooks said.
Williams says that pipeline incidents are one of the most common investigations the NTSB conducts. Since 1996, they have investigated 122 pipeline incidents.
The most recent one was an explosion in Bridgeport in 1999.
