BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The woman killed in the Gate City apartment explosion was the mother of two Birmingham School System students.

Wednesday, Superintendent Dr. Craig Witherspoon offered his support to the familiy. He sent a memo to all schools that "with sadness, we acknowledge the passing of the mother of two of our Woodlawn students in the Gate City explosion yesterday."

Witherspoon is calling on all city schools to rally behind the grieving family and others affected by the tragedy.

"To all the schools and all the our employees certainly, we are all connected and when things happens to our students or happens in our community we want to make sure we are part of the solution to do what we can to ease the pain," he said.

Witherspoon says his staff has been taking food and supplies to the schools with students directly affected by the explosion. He commended parents and staff at Oliver School who moved to support those families Tuesday.
