The Fox6 StormWarn Team says those in the viewing area should not be fooled by the seemingly calm weather they may be currently experiencing. Viewers need to understand that the severe weather threat has not passed.
A strong line of storms is slowly incoming from the west. It will move through the state overnight Saturday and into the early morning hours of Sunday. If possible, do not go to bed tonight without a plan to be weather aware, in case of a sudden upswing in severe weather activity. If you have a weather radio, you are urged to get on the phone to share any weather information with anyone who will also be affected.
The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for a portion of the FOX6 viewing area. Blount, Fayette, Greene, Jefferson, Lamar, Marion, Pickens, Sumter, Tuscaloosa, Walker and Winston Counties are under the watch until 2:00 a.m. Sunday.
Severe storms and tornadoes have resulted in confirmed damage in Arkansas and Mississippi. We're receiving reports of semi-tractor trailers that have been flipped and homes destroyed.
Severe weather, including damaging winds and tornadoes, is in the forecast. The areas most at risk include Northwest Alabama including The Shoals as well as Marion, Lamar, Winston, Fayette, and Walker Counties. Severe weather is still forecast areawide, but those counties have the highest risk of tornado development. This system is moving a bit slower, but is still packing a punch. High shear values, combined with tremendous instability, are increasing our severe weather risk.
We should prepare for winds over 60mph with this system as well as tornadoes. Storms began impacting West Alabama around 9 p.m. and will last overnight. The threat for severe weather should end in East Alabama by 9am. The National Weather Service has confirmed that the 40-50 mph winds could bring down trees and power lines.
The FOX6 Stormwarn team will have LIVE updates at the top and bottom of the hour on FOX6
