Veterans at the Ryan Winslow Veterans Center in Center Point got a knock at the door from the Jefferson County Sheriff's office. Much to the veterans' surprise, this wasn't an official visit, but was the deputies bringing a little Christmas cheer.
Many of the veterans at the center are there without their families. Some of them would have been alone this Christmas, if it wasn't for some of Santa's helpers who just happen to sheriff's deputies.
"This is the best thing that ever happened to veteran's right here," said Brian Curtis.
"You can't get anything better than this," said Stephen Heindl.
Curtis, an Iraq veteran, and Heindl, a Vietnam veteran, couldn't believe what they were seeing when the Jefferson County Sheriff's office showed up with a car load of Christmas presents and a feast that will surely last them for days.
"It's incredible," said Heindl. "People have come and gone and fed us, talked to us like we're human beings."
For Heindl, this outpouring of generosity is something he didn't get when he returned home from Vietnam. "When I came home, it just wasn't nice. So this is a major pat on the back and you really feel good about yourself sometimes now," said Heindl.
That is exactly how Ashley Mann and Joni Money with the sheriff's office wanted these veterans to feel.
"This was kind of a no brainer here. I patrol this area and several of the other people out here have patrolled the area,' said Deputy Mann. "They don't have families to spend Christmas with so what can we do to brighten their holidays."
Which is exactly what they did, no warning they were coming, just showed up out of the blue.
"Had no clue," said Heindl. "Just ate a big old bowl of chili about two hours ago and then you all show up here and here we are."
"You're sitting in the veteran's center, thinking your families not here; you have no one coming to see you," said Curtis. "It's always good to have people come and see you and give this respect they give you."
The sheriff's office plans on making this an annual tradition.
