A federal court has barred a local Montgomery area tax preparer from preparing tax returns for others, George L. Beck Jr. the attorney for the Middle District of Alabama announced Tuesday.
The order was signed by Judge Mark E. Fuller of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Alabama. The suit alleges that the harm to the United States Treasury could be in the millions of dollars range.
According to complaints, Kenya Hendrix Adams falsely claimed or inflated tax credits and fabricated deductions. Adams repeatedly prepared federal tax returns that understated her clients' federal tax liabilities.
"These fraudulent tax preparers create a horrible problem in this area," stated U.S. Attorney Beck. "What they are doing must be stopped and I applaud the IRS for taking the steps to shut them down."
Claiming bogus tax refunds is one of the IRS's Dirty Dozen Tax Scams. The Justice Department's Tax Division has obtained injunctions against hundreds of tax fraud promoters and tax preparers in the past decade.
