Hanover investigators are working to solve a Christmas day murder, the county's first homicide of the year. Keith Wood, 53, is charged with first degree murder of George Teal, 49.
Investigators say the violence broke out at Wood's home on the 8,000 block of Peaks Road in Mechanicsville. Teal suffered brutal trauma to his head and body. Investigators say they found Teal on the floor, unresponsive. Officials aren't commenting at this point on exactly how the victim was brutalized, or if any weapons were used.
Teal was rushed to VCU Medical Center, where he later died.
Investigators say the Wood and Teal knew each other.
Vicki Farmer, a neighbor in the area, says severe crimes like this are uncommon for Hanover County. This was the year's first homicide.
"Murder is very unusual around here," said Farmer.
Sources say an alcohol-fueled fight may have led to the violence. However, investigators aren't confirming specifics.
Wood is being held, without bond at Pamunkey Regional Jail. No other suspects are being sought in connection to this case.
The Hanover Sheriff's Office is asking anyone with information about this murder case to call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.
