WAVELAND, MS (WLOX) -

Hancock County's homeless community is in shock after learning one of their own was murdered. Police say the body of David Bourgeois, 58, was found on Christmas Day in an abandoned shed he called home.

Members of Hancock County's homeless population gathered at King's Kitchen in Bay St. Louis Thursday for a hot meal. Many who showed up were friends of the murder victim.

"It's a shock man, I'm surprised he's gone," said Todd Wimbish.

Wimbish often camped out with David Bourgeois. He even visited him at the place Bourgeois called home.

"Being on the streets, you see him going from place to place. He's a cool dude as long as he wasn't upset or mad. He's a good dude. He'd talk to anybody," explained Wimbish.

Bourgeois talked to WLOX when South Mississippi saw its first hard freeze of the year in November. He was proud to show off the warm coat he received from Central Bible Church's clothes closet for the needy.

"It makes me feel kind of sad, but he's probably in a better place," said Kelly Redford.

Redford was one of Bourgeois' best friends. He said he didn't deserve to be murdered.

"The only thing I can say is, I wouldn't know really who would want to do that."

Police have released few details about the circumstances surrounding the murder. They wouldn't say exactly how the victim died or if they have a suspect in the case. But investigators did say they have some strong leads to go on.

"For somebody to do that to somebody who don't have nothing, to take it to the extreme to murder them or cause him any kind of harm at all, it's kind of scary. Because we're all out here in the same way," Wimbish said.

Wimbish and others are now just hoping the person responsible is brought to justice. The shed where Bourgeois lived is on Highway 90 about a block west of the Waveland Walmart.
