Police have arrested a Sylacauga school employee on sex charges involving a student.
Rodricus Arlester Thomas, a 31-year-old man from Sylacauga, is charged with second degree rape and "school employee engaging in a sex act or deviant sexual intercourse with a student under the age of 19," according to Lt. Willis Whatley with the Sylacauga Police Department.
Rodricus Thomas is listed as a "Related Arts – Physical Education" teacher on the website for Nichols-Lawson Middle School, the only middle school in the Sylacauga City Schools system. According to his page on the school website, he taught 6th grade P.E.
Thomas was arrested on Dec. 29 and booked into the Talladega County Jail. He received a $20,000 bond for each charge.
If Thomas is found guilty, police say he could face between two and 20 years in prison for each charge.
Sylacauga City Schools issued the following statement in connection to the investigation:
On December 29, the Sylacauga Police Department notified the Sylacauga City Schools of a criminal investigation involving one of our employees. The employee was immediately placed on administrative leave from work. The Sylacauga City Schools is working diligently with the Sylacauga Police Department and other administrative agencies to ensure the safety and well-being of our students and employees.
