Alabama Power says almost 17,000 Alabamians are without power on Tuesday morning while a frigid blast of cold weather pours over the state. According to Alabama Power spokesperson Keisa Sharpe, the outage is directly caused by the extreme temperatures.
Obviously, these are extreme conditions, conditions that we just don't see everyday around our state and around the southeast, quite frankly. It absolutely is impacting our system and our customers," said Sharpe. "…The best that I can explain to you it at this point, it's a loading issue. When you talk about the sub and frigid cold temperatures, it affects the system and its ability to load and meet the needs of the customers at this point."
Sharpe says crews are working as fast as possible to get power restored. She says various areas around Birmingham are experiencing the outages.
"We're wanting to make sure that we can do everything to make sure those customers are restored quickly and we're hoping they can be as comfortable as they can with this weather," said Sharpe.
During the frigid temperatures, Alabama Power will not be cutting any customer's power off. If you need to report an outage, visit AlabamaPower.com or call 1-800-888-2726.
