A specially-called meeting to discuss cutting the Fairfield Police Department was cancelled Tuesday after the council failed to meet quorum. FOX6 News has also learned that one of those missing councilors is in jail.
Several council members didn't appear at Tuesday'd planned meeting and officials tell us Councilor Primus Mack is in custody for enticing a minor.
This is just one of several issues the city is facing. Monday, Councilor Willie. Hardley, Jr. suggested eliminating the police department and contracting with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. This came about after Hardley says the council was left in the dark about ongoing investigation and an alleged rise in crime.
Officers attended Monday night's meeting, saying they are hard pressed to do their jobs because of a lack of staff and equipment.
Hardley says he hasn't yet spoke to Sheriff Mike Hale about the situation but he wanted to shake things up.
"I hate it got to this point but I just wanted to get their attention, I want to get the mayor's attention so I'm hoping we got his attention to do something," Hardley said.
Tune in at 10 to hear from the Fairfield Police Chief on the situation. You can watch on air, online at http://foxalabamalive.com and through the WBRC News app.
