FOX6 News spoke with a local doctor about some ways you can keep your immune system strong during flu season.
Dr. Thomas Nielsen with American Family Care says according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Alabama was the first state with a widespread outbreak of the flu.
"The flu vaccine this year is not complete coverage. We're certainly seeing people who had flu shot several months ago and now have confirmed flu," Nielsen said.
Dr. Nielsen says there are some things you can do to help keep your immune system strong during a time when everyone is getting sick.
At the top of the list are: eat well and exercise.
"Exercise strengthens our bodies and allows us to fight off different infections," Nielsen said.
He also says to drink plenty of water to avoid getting dehydrated, which lowers the body's defenses.
Dr. Nielsen says also advises patienst to protect themselves from germs left behind by others who are sick.
"Use cleaning products, germicides to wipe down different areas. Especially commonly used areas, door knobs," he said.
He says if a person touches a germy surface and then your nose, eyes, or mouth they could infect themselves.
So what about taking vitamins to stay healthy?
"Unfortunately more of the studies we've done over past decade or so looking at vitamins in a formal way, have not shown any long term beneficial or short term beneficial effects in fighting colds," Nielson said.
