A Monday night house fire has claimed the life of a 66-year-old Blount County man. The Blount County coroner identified the man as Donald Clayton Whited.
Whited lived off of Ebell Road just outside of Oneonta. Authorities were called to the scene about 7 p.m. Monday night.
Tuesday afternoon the area was still active with investigators. The state fire marshal's office, the Oneonta Fire Department and the Blount County Sheriff's office were all on the scene.
Whited lived in the wooden home by himself. Charles and Gail Sloan were relatives who lived just down the road. They questioned investigators for information about Whited's death.
"One of my wife's cousins called, told her the house was fully enflamed. We got our shoes on and run out there right quick. It was already gone by the time we got there," Sloan said.
The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time. Blount County Sheriff Lloyd Arrington said it's too soon to determine if foul play was involved or not.
Sloan said Whited worked on a farm for years until he became disabled. Sloan said the disability did not impair Whited's mobility but the 66-year-old man did have health issues.
"He was real quiet and stayed to himself. Real independent. Very private person. He didn't bother anybody," Sloan said.
Whited's body was carried to Huntsville to the state's forensic lab to determine a cause of death.
