MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

More than $20,000 worth of guns, gold and cash has been stolen from the home of a local attorney and former school board member in the Blackman community.

The burglars tip-toed their way through the house, according to police, picking and choosing which guns to take and not to take.

The homeowner, who did not want to be identified, said he has lived in the neighborhood for 25 years and nothing like this has ever happened before.

Murfreesboro Pawn and Gun owner Jay Davies knows a thing or two about guns, so he sympathizes with the homeowner who had 20 of them stolen, many of them antiques.

"He had some really nice guns," Davies said, as he looked at the list of stolen weapons on an incident report.

Davies said a pawn shop probably will be the last place the crooks will show up trying to sell the hot guns.

"And they know if you bring it to a pawn shop with all the information we collect from the people we do business with, you will go to jail," he said.

The victim noticed the guns were missing Thursday but believes they were stolen sometime from mid-December to mid-January.

The burglars also stole expensive jewelry and nearly $5,000 cash.

There was no forced entry into the home, according to police, and the burglars carefully chose which guns to take, never ransacking the home.

"The victim was distraught," said Murfreesboro police spokesman Sgt. Kyle Evans. "The homeowner had a lot of sentimental attachment of these firearms that were taken."

Police are concerned that the guns could end up in the wrong hands.

"Anytime a firearm is stolen from a vehicle or a resident, it is a concern, because it then becomes a stolen firearm that could be used in the commission of a crime," Evans said.

The victim also told Channel 4 News that his wife is still having a tough time dealing with the break-in due to fear the burglar could return.

Police said they will also be monitoring online auction sites to see if any of the guns show up for sale.
