BBJ - Mike talked with Cindy Crawford from the Birmingham Business Journal about local business headlines and an exciting new design for the BBJ's web and print product! They discussed how Birmingham's incentives to businesses pull local businesses from area communities and into the city limits, but some feel this money should be used to lure new businesses to the city instead; what to expect from Regions in 2014; and what it means that Alabama's Taxpayer Bill of Rights passes the House. For more on these and other business stories, visit www.birminghambusinessjournal.com.
CAPTAIN PHILLIPS - Mike talked with actor Barkhad Abdi who played the role of Muse, the lead Somali pirate captain in the highly successful film "Captain Phillips." He discussed his role in the film, his real life amazing story, and his Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. The role is his acting debut as he was working as a chauffeur when he was cast. He had no previous acting experience or any aspirations to become an actor. "Captain Phillips" is based on the true story behind the first American cargo ship hijacking in 200 years, the Maersk Alabama, and its U.S. Navy rescue in 2009. The emotionally charged and critically acclaimed film focuses on the relationship between the ship's captain, Richard Phillips (Hanks), and the Somali pirate captain (breakout actor Barkhad Abdi) who takes him hostage 145 miles off the Somali coast, with both men at the mercy of forces beyond their control. The film is now available on Blu-ray™ Combo Pack DVD & Digital.
ZOO CREW - Kelly Wall joined us from the Birmingham Zoo to introduce Mickey to a blue tongue skink. To learn more information about the animal or visit the zoo, go to birminghamzoo.com.
COMEDIAN - Cowboy Bill Martin is one of the most talented performers seen on stage today. The Texas native, who has toured with some of the biggest names in country music including George Jones, George Strait, Brad Paisley and Rascal Flatts and has headlined clubs and theaters across the U.S. and Canada, delivers an electrifying performance which uniquely combines real stories of do-it-yourself mishaps, plus hilarious stories of love, life and hope. No problem stop at the Dollar Tree before you go. http://www.dollartree.com/ Stop by their kids aisle and look for clown bow ties, wigs, noses, glow sticks, stickers, even $1 bags of cotton candy. The cheapest souvenirs at the circus are $4 giant suckers and $5 coloring books. Another tip, street vendors are usually around and their prices are lower than the prices inside if you're on a budget but want a glowing sword or whirly light. Since the theme is construction and build to amaze, you could also snag some plastic construction hats for a $1. Other possible options would be circus theme treat bags with stickers, candy and circus notepads or coloring books, all spotted at the dollar store.
