Computer models are leaning towards a long stretch of below-freezing temperatures beginning Monday evening and potentially lasting through Thursday morning.
The meteogram image shows the temperature line dropping below the freezing line for 60-65 consecutive hours. Two long range models, the GFS and EUROPEAN, show the below-freezing air filtering in Monday evening and lingering across the deep South through the morning hours Thursday.
There is only a slim chance both Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon that temperatures will rise above the freezing mark by a couple of degrees for about a one- to three-hour stretch. Either way, this long stretch is very concerning. Hopefully you are prepared to continue to protect your pipes, loved ones, pets and have a way to safely stay warm.
This next cold spell sticks out like a sore thumb because normal lows this time of year are around 34 degrees and the normal high is 54 degrees. We'll continue to track this upcoming cold spell and update you as new computer model data comes in.
According to NOAA, there have been several periods where the minimum temperature fell below 32 degrees for even longer than we are predicting for next week:
