Across Alabama, there are still hundreds of thousands of people who are not signed up for health insurance. One group wants to help them get signed up and make sure they know that another firm deadline is coming soon.
Enroll Alabama's job is to walk people through the process of signing up for an insurance plan on healthcare.gov. A spokesperson for the group says they have seen an increase in people signing up, especially with the website working again. They want that number to continue going up.
On Monday, local health professionals and Enroll Alabama volunteers will launch a series of round table discussions about how to improve enrollment. They will meet every Monday from now through March at the Elite Center on 6th Avenue South in downtown Birmingham. They hope to get the word out about signing up so no one gets a penalty from the government.
As of December, about 29,000 Alabamians enrolled for insurance though the healthcare.gov website. While it's a good start, Enroll Alabama says there are more than 600,000 uninsured Alabamians that could qualify for coverage under the new healthcare law.
