On Tuesday, the Birmingham City Council may approve some changes in governance of the Birmingham Water Works Board. This would come in advance of a bill that is in the works that would make drastic changes to the water board; including setting term limits, requiring public hearings before rate increases and adding representation from outside counties.
On Tuesday, the council considers 2 resolutions. The first would put in a two-term limit for any Birmingham Water Works board member. Those term limits are technically in place now, but they can be waived for "emergency circumstances." If proposed legislation passes, it would close that loophole.
The council will also consider a resolution that would let the Jefferson County Mayor's Association help select 1 of the 5 water works board members from outside the city limits to represent customers of the water works board who do not have a voice on the board now.
