South Alabama will likely be impacted Tuesday by a significant winter storm. This means accumulating snowfall, icy conditions and the possibility of severe travel issues.
While most of the FOX6 viewing area will escape the winter weather, several of our southernmost counties will likely see at least some snowfall.
Chilton, Coosa, Tallapoosa and Clay Counties could see some snowfall. Amounts in those counties will likely range from a dusting to an inch. However, I think the most likely place to see significant snow would be areas south of I-85.
It's a bit uncommon to see snow this far south in the state, but that's simply where the cold air and moisture will be tomorrow. We're expecting overrunning precipitation early Tuesday with a change to snowfall during the afternoon.
If you have travel plans, especially south of Montgomery, please stay close to weather information. Significant travel problems are likely. Snow could reach as far south as the Florida panhandle. For those traveling east, snow is likely south of the Atlanta metro area through South Georgia and into the Carolinas.
The NWS says the greatest chance for snow will be between noon on Tuesday and 3 a.m. Wednesday, with the heaviest activity likely between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m. Tuesday.
A winter weather advisory will be in effect for much of mid-to-south Alabama from 10 a.m. Tuesday until 6 a.m. Wednesday.
