SUV crashes into Nashville market in burglary attempt

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The future of a south Nashville market is up in the air after an SUV crashed through its front doors early Tuesday. Omid Market on Rains Avenue has been a target of crime for years, and customers are now wondering if the market should close for good.

The market was closed when Tuesday's crash happened, and police believe it was an intentional hit to burglarize the store.

"It shocked me. As soon as I walked up on it, I saw that they got robbed again," said customer Antonio Wade.

The driver who did the damage fled the scene, leaving the SUV behind in what is just the latest blow to the family who owns the business.

"He has had break-ins before, and I've fixed stuff, but this is the worst," said family friend Troy Coleman.

Several years ago, the market's former owner was killed during a robbery at the store.

The married father of four, Ebadollah Ghorbani, was shot to death during a confrontation with two robbers in 2006 on what was the 10th anniversary of his immigration from Iran.

The murder was caught on surveillance video, and 16-year-old Nasser Muhsin was later convicted for the killing.

"My prayers go out to them and it's just sad," Wade said.

Ghorbani's sons have kept the store open, working behind the counter to keep their father's dream of owning a small business alive.

But crime has continued to plague the store. In the last five months, there have been four other burglaries.

"I worry about them all the time because their father got killed here. You just never know," Coleman said.

"I'd hate to see it go, but if things like this keep on going on and on, you have no choice," Wade said.
