Alabama Governor Robert Bentley says he knows of at least five people who have died from weather-related traffic accidents across the state.
He confirmed that the deaths were from vehicle accidents, not cold-exposure. State troopers identified three of the fatalities earlier today. Troopers say a two-year-old boy, his 29-year-old father and a 64-year-old Birmingham woman are among the people who died in weather-related wrecks.
The governor also reports 23 injuries relating to the winter storm.
Helicopters are now flying over areas to rescue people. The governor said if they see pockets of cars that are stranded, they'll put down a helicopter to pick them up.
The state of emergency will be in effect as long as necessary, the governor said.
