New law could streamline Arizona's specialty license plates

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Arizona lawmakers are trying to pass a law that will streamline specialty or vanity plates in the state.

Right now there are more than 50 different types of specialty plates Arizona drivers can get; a majority of them look a lot different from the standard Arizona license plate.

Last week the House Transportation Committee voted to add six more specialty plates to the Arizona lineup.

Specialty plates can help drivers support a cause or show school/team spirit, but there is such a variety of them and all are not alike it could cause confusion to both law enforcement and witnesses to an accident.

State Senator Steve Farley, from Tucson has put together a bill that would keep all the Arizona plates similar in style.  The new law would make specialty plates similar in appearance to the standard Arizona issued plate, but would have a specialty logo to the left side of the number.

Farley stated some law enforcement agencies have had trouble identifying vehicles from the state with so many varied styles of specialty plates.
