Mercedes-Benz Marathon organizers are calling this year's race the "Lucky 13" but it has been anything but lucky.
"Some of our medals ended up at Amazon and the Amazon warehouse called us and took pictures of them and said, 'Do these belong to ya'll?' We're like, 'Ya!,'" said event organizer, Valerie McLean.
McLean said the weather has definitely impacted this year's race from the misplacement and re-ordering of lost shirts to people having to cancel all together this has been the year of 13.
"We've gotten a few emails already from folks who just couldn't be re-routed to Birmingham until Tuesday," she said.
Even with people having to cancel McLean said race numbers are still up. This weekend about 13,000 people are expected to hit the streets of Birmingham.
One of those runners includes first time Mercedes half marathon runner, Melissa Marty. Initially she said her fear wasn't about the course but rather the weather.
"I'm a Southern girl and I don't like to run in the cold so I feel better knowing now that it's not going to be quite so cold," said Marty.
In years past runners have had to layer it up and push through below freezing temps. But this year, FOX6 News Meteorologist J-P Dice says we can expect temperatures in the 40s at race time Sunday.
That is welcome news for some but McLean says runners will have to be even more careful about hydration.
"We've already been talking with the medical team to make sure there's more water on the course and we're prepared for any dehydration issues and things that would happen when temperatures go up like that," said McLean.
The race starts at 7:03 a.m. Sunday in front of Boutwell Auditorium. For more information about the race, visit http://mercedesmarathon.com.
