(FOX) - The U.S. Navy has said it is getting ready to deploy its first ever laser weapon.

The highly anticipated laser technology will become a reality this summer when it debuts on the USS Ponce warship.

The tech-savvy weapon has reportedly progressed to the point where a single sailor can control it.

The Navy said within the next two years it also plans to incorporate an electromagnetic rail gun to one of its ships.

A program manager from the naval command said making these technologies operational will "fundamentally change the way" the U.S. conducts warfare.
