U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell and U.S. Rep. John Lewis visited Bellingrath Middle School Friday in celebration of Black History Month.
Feeling unworthy of being the speaker of the event, Rep. Sewell invited Rep. Lewis to speak to students and faculty about his experiences as a child.
Lewis theme was about Civil Rights and he gave students and faculty encouraging words.
"You must never give up, you must never give in, you must never get lost in a sea of despair, you must not lose hope," Lewis said.
Lewis was influential in organizing Martin Luther King's March on Washington as well as leading marchers in the first attempted walk from Selma to Montgomery in 1965.
Rep. Lewis is an Alabama native, born and raised in Pike County and celebrated his 74th birthday Friday.
