The "Help Wanted" sign is out in front of Shreveport City Hall. It's almost time to elect a new mayor.

Candidates are already jockeying for position. For many the question is, "Who has the best chance to win?" I suggest the question should be, "Who is the best person to lead the city?"

Whoever is elected, they will face some tough issues: infrastructure, streets, sewer and water. All need millions of dollars in attention.

Crime is an issue. There are neighborhoods where people are victimized on a nightly basis.

And there is the economy. Just this month, Shreveport was given the title of having the fastest shrinking economy in America.

Of course, every city has its challenges. So, what should we look for in a new Shreveport mayor?

The mayor needs to have a vision for the city. A vision we can all buy into. That vision needs to be developed into specific goals, goals that are feasible and achievable. A good mayor must surround himself with smart, dependable managers to implement the plan. And lastly, and perhaps the most important ingredient, honesty. Don't make promises you can't keep. Rise above the politics.

I'd like to hear what you think makes a good mayor. The election is in November.

I'm James Smith.
