Lady Cavs enter conference play on roll

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Darton State Lady Cavaliers are off to a red-hot start, and they hope to keep it up as conference play begins Friday.

The Lady Cavs are 11-3 in 2014, with a 4-0 record against Top 15 teams.

But they hope they're just getting started.

"We played those first 14 [games] to find out what we were going to do for this weekend," says Darton State head coach Eric Neel.  "It's conference time, and we feel good about the lineup we've put in place."

"We know what we need to work on, and we know how to approach it," says sophomore pitcher Jostlyn Higgerson. "I think the key to it is going to be us actually following through and getting everything done the way it needs to be."

As talented as this group has shown, many might be surprised by this start, considering this team has had three different head coaches since the end of last season.

But Neel says this team has worked even harder than he imagined they would, and that is what is leading this team.

"Honestly, I think we went those fourteen games better than I anticipated," Neel says. "But also at the same time, we're a very talented team. They're really being unselfish in the way they're taking responsibility for things."

The offensive output has helped too.

You could say these chicks dig the long ball.

Darton State ranks 9th in the NJCAA with 17 home runs this season, and 15th in doubles.

They rank in the top 40 in a total of 13 offensive categories, including hits, runs, and batting average.

Neel says the team is just doing what they've been asked.

"They're sticking to the game plan that we've been trying to give them for the last six weeks," Neel says.

The pitchers especially have taken notice to the Lady Cavs' potent offense.

"I've never really played for a team where every single one of our hitters can actually do something really great to get runs on the board for our team," Higgerson says. "It's really awesome to have girls that can do their job."

Darton State opens conference play with a home doubleheader against West Georgia Tech on Friday.
