MOUNTAIN BROOK, AL (WBRC) -

An old neighborhood friend may be returning to Crestline Village in Mountain Brook.

For years, the Piggly Wiggly Grocery Store was a hometown favorite.

"It wasn't just a grocery store…but it was a gathering place and the relationships made over time were significant," says Suzan Doidge, the executive director of the Mountain Brook Chamber of Commerce.

But despite residents' best efforts to keep it open, the store closed in November 2013. A few months later, news came that the CVS pharmacy, which sits just about a block away, would move into the old Piggly Wiggly spot.

Then Monday night came news that preliminary plans were presented to bring The Pig back to Crestline Village. The unexpected aspect of this move is that the Pig could move to the spot where the CVS is currently located. City officials say the proposal would be to tear down the current CVS building and build a new Piggly Wiggly that would be bigger than former store.

"I'm thrilled with the prospect they may return," says resident Tom Owens. "It's an opportunity for great redevelopment number one and number two, it's a tremendous asset and addition to the community."

A big part of the plan is contingent upon CVS's move. The company is still working with the city to see if a drive through lane can be added at the new spot.
