BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The Etowah County Sheriff's Office says they have arrested and charged a day care worker with aggravated child abuse.

41-year-old Karen Lynn Rowland, of Piedmont, is facing two counts of aggravated child abuse for incidents that happened the week of February 10 at Kids Kingdom Daycare. Rowland is believed to have screamed and cursed at two 4-year-olds before hitting one in the face with a folder and slamming the other child's head down against the table. The children's parents reported the incidents to the Sheriff's Office. The Sheriff's Office says they were able to recover video from the business of the alleged abuse.

"I can't begin to imagine how anyone would consider hurting a child who has been entrusted to their care," stated Sheriff Entrekin. "My office will continue to defend children and adults who are defenseless and will do our best to see that the abuser serves an appropriate sentence."

Rowland was arrested on February 25 and booked into the Etowah County Detention Center. She was later released on a $10,000 property bond.

Chief Deputy Michael Barton says investigators feel this was an isolated incident. However, the investigation is ongoing and they are looking into whether daycare officials might have violated the law that requires them to report suspected abuse in a timely fashion.
