Jefferson County lawmakers decided to approve a bill giving excess money from their legislative fund to area schools.
The lawmakers had been receiving part of the money from all pistol permits purchased in the county, which had been used to fund a legislative office in Birmingham and in Bessemer.
The fund had reached about $2 million. Under the proposed bill, anything over $120,000 will be split among Jefferson County Schools.
Some lawmakers wanted to close the legislative offices but others wanted to keep it open.
The bill will now head to the full Alabama House for debate.
