Birmingham Botanical Gardens named top free Ala. attraction

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The Alabama Department of Tourism has named the Birmingham Botanical Gardens the top free attraction in the state for 2013.

The announcement is part of an annual ranking of Alabama's top destinations that include museums, parks, sporting venues and even the beach.

The department says 350,000 people enjoyed the gardens in 2013. The Birmingham Botanical Gardens is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2014 with a year-long series of events.

Beyond providing free space to explore nature, the gardens offer a variety of classes and is a popular wedding destination.

Bryant-Denny Stadium was named the top sporting destination with an attendance of 710,538 in 2013.
