Tuesday, the Birmingham City Council recognized the Wenonah Dragons girls basketball team which won the state championship over the weekend.
The girls were given a trip to council in three limousines. Principal Regina Carr-Hope said the school wanted the student athletes to feel special after bringing so much pride to the school and community.
"We wanted to give them feeling of champions. We felt like they worked hard for it and to deliver them in the way champions would be delivered," Carr-Hope said.
The Parker High School boys were also recognized for winning their class title. Officials with Wenonah and Parker high schools said they would be turning to the community to help raise funds for championship rings for the girls and boys.
