(RNN) - Tensions escalated in parts of Ukraine this week.

Ukrainian officials said more Russian forces have entered the Crimea Peninsula, which primarily speaks Russian. Lawmakers in the Crimea region have announced there will be a public referendum on March 16 allowing voters to choose to stay with Ukraine or join the Russian Federation.

Former IRS official Lois Lerner once again invoked the Fifth Amendment at a House hearing on the IRS targeting scandal. For a second time, she refused to testify about allegations her department applied extra scrutiny to both conservative and liberal political groups that sought tax-exempt status between 2010 and 2012.

The murder trial of Oscar Pistorius has begun in South Africa. The double-amputee Olympic sprinter is charged with killing his model girlfriend last year. He has pleaded not guilty.
