Beaufort streetlight project faces delays

Beaufort streetlight project hit with delays

Posted: Updated:
BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) -

The rainy weather is delaying Beaufort city workers from staying on schedule with their streetlight project, but that's only part of the problem.

Crews are finding lots of these-old, abandoned phone, electric and stormwater lines buried beneath the surface. They've even come across a natural gas line underground.

The city says there are no documents for many of these unmarked utilities, making it harder for them to know what to expect.

Workers have started removing some of the old streetlights on one section of Bay and Carteret streets.

"Underground bay street is like spaghetti with all the different utilities, you've got cable, you've got telephone, you've got electrical, all that's under bay street and we've got to be extremely careful that we don't disrupt somebody's service," Isiah Smalls, said Beaufort Public Works director and facilities management.

Beaufort city leaders will hold a merchants meeting at 9 a.m. Tuesday. at the Best Western Inn.
