Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies hit the streets in McCalla Friday to make sure stores aren't selling alcohol to minors.
Friday's operation stemmed from complaints the sheriff's office received about a store in the area.
Reporter Vanessa Araiza rode along with deputies during their operation. She says that they visited four stores and only one sold alcohol to the undercover agent.
After the operation, FOX6 News asked the cashier why she did it. The cashier, Nikki, tells me she was busy and didn't bother to check the undercover minor's ID. She says in most cases she does check IDs carefully.
At other stores, clerks ID'd the minor and then turned her away.
With prom season in full swing, deputies say this is the perfect time to send a message to those illegally selling and buying alcohol.
The clerk who sold to the underage minor will be charged with a misdemeanor and the store could be issued a fine and possibly lose its license.
