Fairfield police are investigating a woman's body that was dumped in a vacant home's backyard and then set on fire. The unknown female was discovered around 11:30 a.m. Saturday after crews responded to a blaze in the 500 block of 40th street.
A witness, who wished to remain anonymous, described hearing a loud explosion coming from the home and then seeing what looked like a brush fire.
"We walked up on it and we thought it was a fire in the backyard. And as we stood there and looked, we saw it was a body on fire," the witness said. "It was covered with debris and set on fire with gasoline."
Police Chief Leon Davis said, because of the degree of burns, the victim's identity remains unknown.
"All evidence found at the scene indicates the body was transported to this location for disposal and is not the location where the death occurred," said Davis.
The official cause of death remains unknown pending the results of the coroner's autopsy.
"The primary focus of this investigation at this point is identification of the victim and notification of next of kin," said Davis.
