Two teens have been charged in the shooting death of a woman from Tuesday. One of the boys is a relative of the dead woman.
The Jackson County Family Court Division said that the two 16-year-olds are being held at the juvenile detention center, each on one count of first-degree involuntary manslaughter, a Class C felony, and one count of armed criminal action.
Tina Castro, 40, was killed in a shooting at 3:22 p.m. Tuesday at Oakley and Thompson avenues. She was a passenger in a vehicle and was shot to death when a gun in the SUV unexpectedly fired.
A fourth person was also in the vehicle. Sources tell KCTV5 that the woman knew both of the teens and one of them was a relative.
A police source tells KCTV5 that the fatal shot was fired accidentally.
A family friend said the boy is devastated, and he would have never hurt his relative intentionally.
Her death was part of two separate shootings less than five minutes apart in Kansas City. Two other people were injured in the shootings.
A shooting at 3:18 p.m. left two people critically injured. That shooting happened near Cleveland Avenue and Cleaver Boulevard.
One person was taken to the hospital via a private vehicle.
In that case, a blue pickup was seen to have veered off a road and wound up near a building. Crime tape was placed around the truck.
Police said a black man was seen fleeing from the area in a four-door gray Mazda with Georgia license plates.
No suspect descriptions have been released by Kansas City police.
The teen's identities will not be released and their hearings will not be open to the public.
