BOAZ, AL (WAFF) -

An old motel in Boaz is the target of demolition by city officials, but the owners apparently don't want that done.

The motel is located in the heart of Boaz, just off Highway 431. City officials said they've heard for years that it was going to be remodeled. With the passage of time, it has now fallen into a state of disrepair.

Posts and a fence now line the property of the former EconoLodge in Boaz. Portions of the building have fallen apart and graffiti now covers portions of the building.

The city wants it torn down, but United Hotels Group, LLC out of Huntsville is appealing the decision to the Board of Adjustments and the unsafe building abatement board.

Boaz Mayor Tim Walker said they've tried to work with company officials to give them time to do the repairs, but it appears nothing ever seems to get done.

"We are willing to work with any property owner that is willing to bring something nice to Boaz, but the people of Boaz are not going to accept a run-down place anymore. It's just not fair. I believe in people having rights to their property, including the people that's beside them and has to look at all that mess," said Walker.
