The following is an editorial from FOX6 WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Thursday May 1, 2014.
Three years…almost to the day…after tornadoes left a path of death and destruction across our state, we were hit yet again with tornadoes, storms and flooding.
To date, eight tornadoes have been confirmed to have touched down in our viewing area during this event. Three Alabamians lost their lives. We grieve for their families. Nineteen Alabama counties sustained damage, and our prayers go out to those who have lost their homes. Our hope is that a time will come when, no matter how intense an outbreak of severe weather may be, no one will lose their life as a result.
On Tuesday, in a press conference, Governor Bentley gave us some encouraging news. Sixty-five community safe rooms had been commissioned and put in place around our state before this week's severe weather, with 400 community safe rooms funded and in the process of being built. Also, 4,000 individual safe rooms have been built. As our news teams fanned out across the area, in preparation for covering the storm, they found these community rooms in use. We applaud the State's efforts to provide safe haven for folks.
When Alabamians see their fellow citizens in distress, they always ask what they can do to help. Already, we have seen communities, near some of our most hard-hit towns, begin relief efforts.
What can you do? Please join us tomorrow evening, Friday, May 2, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., as FOX6 works with Governor Bentley and the Governor's Relief Fund to raise money to help those in need. During this Relief Fund Drive, we will have folks here at FOX6 ready to answer your calls and to accept whatever money you might be able to give to help your neighbors.
Thank you, in advance, for your kindness and generosity.
