ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -

Athens Police have located a 5-year-old girl after she was reported missing Thursday afternoon.

Aubree Leondra Kirby was visiting her grandmother at the Bonnie Doone Apartments around 5:15 p.m. Thursday.

According to Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson, Aubree and two children were playing on a playground at the apartment complex.

"One of the children was going into town and asked Aubree if she wanted to go," Johnson said. "She asked her grandmother, who told her no, but Aubree went back and said she had permission to go."

When Aubree's grandmother began to miss her, a first-grader said she saw Aubree get into a red car with rust.

"The first-grader did a remarkable job of providing us details about what she saw and the car," said Johnson.

Johnson called in extra officers and called about getting search dogs.

"Officers found a car matching the description at Walmart," Johnson said. "When the owner was located, she told officers that Aubree was at a friend's home, which is where we found her. We are glad she is safe."
