Spartanburg County deputies said a man faces several charges after he fired a gun in a residential neighborhood.
Deputies said they received a call on Saturday that a man had fired a shot towards a house on Houston Street and was walking toward California Avenue.
The first deputy on scene said he spotted the suspect, who was identified as 27-year-old Dustin Elder, and ordered Elder to the ground where the deputy held him at gunpoint until other deputies arrived.
When additional deputies arrived, they pulled a handgun from Elder's waistband, according to incident reports.
Deputies said Elder said he did not mean to fire the gun and also told deputies he had been drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana prior to the incident.
Deputies said Elder's girlfriend arrived at the scene and told deputies the shooting happened inside her vehicle.
She told deputies that she and Elder had been arguing in her car when Elder yelled for her to let him out of the vehicle, according to incident reports. When she looked over, the girlfriend said she saw the gun in Elder's hand, which then went off, shattering her windshield.
The girlfriend said she then sped off because her juvenile sister and daughter were in the car and she feared for their safety.
Deputies said the sister was able to corroborate the story.
Elder was taken into custody and charged with public disorderly conduct, simple possession of marijuana, unlawful carry of a pistol, pointing and presenting a firearm, discharging a firearm while under the influence and malicious injury to personal property.
