SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The UAB softball team (31-24, 15-8 C-USA) broke the program's single-season home run record and captured its seventh series win of 2014, topping the UTSA Roadrunners, 5-3 on Sunday in San Antonio at Roadrunner Field to close out the regular season.
"This is obviously a huge win for our team and this relentless program, coming out on championship Sunday to take the series and secure second place in the Conference USA race," head coach Marla Townsend said. "You've got to give credit to UTSA; they left it all on the field and were very strong from start to finish. Our competitive attitude resulted in our favor, breaking the home run record as well as the program earning win No. 451 for the UAB family."
The Blazers and Roadrunners went back and forth from the third inning all the way through the seventh, but UAB used three home runs to total five runs, breaking the UAB team record for most in a single season with 54.
Senior Leigh Streetman also matched a career record herself, tying for the most wins in a UAB career at 58 after picking up the win in relief on Sunday. She improves to 19-14 on the year and is now one away from tying for the most wins in a single season and one away from breaking the career wins record.
Caitlin Attfield finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, including the two-run home run in the seventh to lift UAB to the win. Kristen McGrath also had a solo shot in the sixth to finish with an RBI, while Mary Warren added two RBI on a two-run home run in the fourth.
Lannah Campbell got the start and tossed 4.1 innings, allowing 11 hits and three runs. Streetman tossed 2.2 innings of work and allowed three hits, but struck out six in relief.
"I couldn't have scripted a better ending to regular season play, to get us ready for the conference tournament next week."
With the win, the Blazers take a runner-up finish in the Conference USA race, and open the Conference USA Championship Thursday in Boca Raton, Fla.
