Pelham police say that a driver in a two-vehicle wreck has passed away from her injuries.
While police have withheld the driver's name, family and friends have identified her as 19-year-old Leslie Burnett.
The accident happened Monday, May 12 at the intersection of Helena Road and Wooddale Drive shortly before 3 p.m.
Police say an Acura Integra, driven by Burnett, pulled in front of a Mazda pickup truck after turning left onto Helena Road from Wooddale Drive. Burnett was airlifted to UAB where she later passed away.
The driver and passenger of the Mazda were treated at a local hospital. Their conditions are unknown.
Tuesday night the Pelham community are mourning the loss of Burnett. Her friends describe her as kind and a girl who had a very bright future ahead of her.
"I think everyone is still struggling to accept that she's gone," explained Dylan Kuper.
He says he never expected to have to say goodbye to his dear friend at such a young age.
"It's hard for me to think somebody that strong and this caring, is now gone," Kuper added.
Burnett had just wrapped up her freshmen year at Auburn University where she was a nursing student. Her friends say her dream was one day be a nurse in the Navy.
"She would've been a high ranking official in the Navy," said Kuper.
Kuper was driving on the very road where Burnett was in the accident Monday.
"We were driving down the road and I just thought it was road work. I didn't even think it was a wreck, let alone a wreck that involved her," added Kuper.
Danielle Ashman says Burnett was an active girl who enjoyed ice skating, participated at her high school's pageants and was part of the ROTC program.
"I can't believe that we lost this incredible young woman that I looked up to," Ashman said.
She says as busy as Burnett was, she always made time for her family and friends.
"She would help me out. She would stay on the phone with me for hours on end, making sure that everything was OK. Making sure that I was OK," added Kuper.
Burnett's mother, Leigh, says her daughter was on her way to pick up her brother from school when the accident happened. She also tells FOX6 News Burnett was the light of her life and she will be greatly missed.
Lt. David Rushton with Pelham Police says no charges are expected to be filed in the crash.
