A Shelby County grand jury has indicted a Chelsea High School teacher for having sexual contact with a student under 19.
Donald Teague, 57, was booked into the Shelby County Jail on a $30,000 bond Thursday. He is now out on bond. The victim is a female student at the school according to investigators.
The Shelby County Sheriff's Office says the incident was reported to the school's resource officer March 18, 2014 and the investigation was turned over to the sheriff's office.
Chelsea High School sophomore Abby Marbut says rumors were going around in March about a relationship between a student and Teague.
"I know he was really friendly to us, but I never would have thought it would go to this extent," Marbut said.
Shelby County Schools officials say that Teague has been on administrative leave since mid-March. He was a social studies teacher and fulfilled administrative coaching duties for girls volleyball and basketball.
Resident Carroll Lee says if the allegations are true "this should be dealt with very harshly. Tamal Savage's daughter played on the volleyball team last year.
"I just think it's disgusting," Savage said. "You entrust your children to these people and you don't really know what they're doing with their lifestyle, who they are. You have to raise your children, pray that they're not victim to it."
Shelby County Schools has released this statement on Teague's indictment and arrest:
"The Shelby County Schools District has been notified by law enforcement officials that a teacher has been arrested and charged with criminal misconduct. The gravity of the charges necessitated immediate action by the Board and that was taken. Because the matter is the subject of law enforcement investigation and action, we are not at liberty to discuss further details at this time. We are, however, cooperating with the Sheriff's Department in this investigation."
FOX6 News tried to reach Teague by phone but the only number we found for him was disconnected.
