A video posted online has caught the attention of Birmingham law enforcement.
Friends of a man shot and killed by a Jefferson County Sheriff's deputy last week appear on camera, using what police call threatening language.
Birmingham Police Lt. Sean Edwards says the people in the video are believed to be part of the gang, Goons Taking Over (GTO). The man killed last week was reportedly a member of that gang.
Even with this video coming out, Edwards says he's grateful these people are showing their true colors.
"We appreciate them making the video because it lets us know, all know who they are, where they live and what their intentions are. Also, it's another opportunity for their parents to really see what their young men are participating in," Edwards said.
Jefferson District Attorney Brandon Falls says the timing of the video is especially offensive.
The release of the video comes not only a week after the deputy-involved shooting but also on the eve of Birmingham Officer Keary Hollis' funeral. Hollis was shot and killed last weekend in Ensley. Edwards say police are going to concentrate on their main goals: protecting the public and each other while on the job.
